Что безмятежно улыбался нам;

She came in the dim of the desert dawn
From the mists of the magic south
And the date leaves withered beneath her breath
As they wilt in a deathly drought.
And, oh, like the sting of the adder's fang
Was the kiss of her scarlet mouth.
There in my tent she stood and laughed -
Full were her lips and red -
Naked as day in the ghostly grey
Ere the leprous stars had fled,
And her terrible beauty all unveiled
Would fire the blood of the dead.
Oh, the red of the moon was the red of blood
Was the red of her mocking lips
Was the red of the silken sash she wore
About her sinuous hips,
And her armlets clashed in the desert night
Like the clack of the slaver's whips.
She lapped me close in her cold, strong arms,
I sank in her embrace.
Like a scaring wind from Nubia
Was her breath upon my face,
And the shadows whirled about my tent
Like ghosts in a grisly race.
She led me over the ends of the earth
Out on the path of the moon
Where planets sway through the Milky Way
And reel to a cosmic rune -
And many a wind-borne soul went by
That wailed like a wandering loon.
She swept me up to the shadow Sphinx
With its enigmatic smile
That stores the wisdom of all the years
And the evil and the guile
And she showed me the image, vague and drab,
That sits by the river Nile.
